Private Chef vs Catering: Which Is Right for Your Event?

By Chef Ricky · 2026-10-31

The short answer

If you want each course cooked and served at your table, book a private chef. If you're feeding a big crowd and want generous platters, catering makes more sense. I do both: plated dinners and family-style buffets, all cooked on-site in your home.

How the food is made

Most catering is cooked elsewhere and dropped off. When I cater, I cook in your kitchen, so food comes out hot and fresh. With a private chef dinner, every plate is finished in front of your guests.

Guest count and price

My plated Fine Dining starts at $175 per person for 8 or more guests. My Family-Style Buffet starts at $120 per person and is built for 20 or more. For 2 to 9 people, a Small Gathering menu is quoted per event.
